FFmpeg 0.6, codenamed "Works with HTML5", Released
After nearly 15 months, FFmpeg developers have finally released another major version, FFmpeg 0.6 a.k.a "Works with HTML5". It might not sound like a "codename" but it really tells you a lot about what major improvements does this release comes with.
The major focus of this release is the support for HTML5 video. There have been some speed improvements in H.264 and Theora decoder with a few important updates in Vorbis decoder. And best of all FFmpeg 0.6 has added support for Google's WebM video format. According to the announcement on FFmpeg.org,
This release supports Google's newly released libvpx library for the VP8 codec and the matroska demuxer was extended to support to WebM container.
Other major updates include a new ffprobe tool, various ARM optimizations, addition of decoders for various proprietary and non-propreitary codecs - Intel Indeo 5, WMA Pro, WMA Voice and HE-AAC, MPEG-4 Audio Lossless Coding(ALS).
