New Improvements in Ubuntu Software Center

Ubuntu is making Linux easier and more user friendly day by day for its users. Just consider the latest improvements in the Ubuntu Software Center. Now, there is a separate section for "must have" applications which couldn't be included on the disc. PPAs can also be viewed in the new Software Center.

I was reading this blog by Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu Community Manager, from where I came to know about this news. And in his words.

  • Featured Category – there is a special top-level category for highly recommended applications that we don’t have room for on the disc. This includes the GIMP and Abiword right now. We will add more throughout the release cycle.
  • Personal Package Archives – PPAs are now visible inside the software center. This is another step closer to making opportunistic development rocking in Ubuntu. :-)

Yeah, don't waste your time with it, last time I did I discovered it only displayed a predetermined set of packages the Ubuntu devs think you want. If you want a decent frontend to the Ubuntu repos and Apt, use Synaptic, it doesn't try to guess away the packages because it thinks you don't want a certain kind. Just another tool provided by Canonical to give you even less power and flexibility over Linux. Tools like this make me glad I don't use Ubuntu anymore.
