Firefox for Mobile (codenamed as Fennec) is Mozilla's take to provide an open-source Mobile Browser for ARM devices such as Mobile Phones and PDAs. It’s built on the same engine as Firefox 3.6, with extensive changes to enhance performance and enrich user experience of users made specifically to work on mobile devices. Currently, Mozilla is developing Firefox for Nokia Maemo and Google Android. Hitherto, the only stable release has been made for Nokia Maemo device, N900 particularly. Fennec for Android is still in its development stages but has been released to get early user feedbacks. Mozilla has also released Firefox Mobile for desktops. Developers can install this mobile version of Firefox to their PC in order to test, provide feedback and build add-ons. But up till now, its only meant for developmental purposes only.

Speed, Responsiveness and Stability to get a boost in the next Firefox for Mobile, Fennec 2.0

Firefox developers are planning to bring some very productive changes in the next version of their mobile browser, Fennec 2.0. This upcoming browser will support Hardware accelerated rendering and out of process web content. Mark Finkle wrote in a post about the inclusion of Project Layers and Project Electrolysis which will enable these two powerful features in the next Firefox for Mobile.

Hardware Accelerated Theora for Firefox Mobile, codenamed Fennec, on Nokia N900

Matthew Gregan, a Mozilla employee working on improving audio and video support in Firefox, posted a blog about enabling Full screen video playback on Firefox on Mobile, Fennec on Nokia N900 without hogging 100% CPU. This has been possible due to David's work on the Project Leonora, funded by Mozilla, to enable Theora decoding on a DSP - hardware accelerated Ogg Theora.

Fennec for Android arrives, a pre-alpha release

So, finally Fennec developers are ready to bring a pre-alpha release on Android. One of the developers, Vladimir, announced in a blog post that they are proud to bring a Fennec build usable by general Android users. This is the first time Firefox for Mobile, aka Fennec, will land on Android phones for general public and the developers are looking forward for a huge response and feedback.

Mozilla has launched a contest to speed up the add-ons development for the newly released Firefox for Mobile Browser. Add-on developers all around the world are challenged to use their innovation and skills to come up with some great add-ons for the Mobile browser keeping in mind the mobile context (small screen size, touch screen, etc.). Top 10 winners will be awarded a N900 + some great mobile merchandise.
