Maemo is a software platform that is mostly based on open source code and powers mobile devices such as the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. Maemo platform has been developed by Nokia in collaboration with many open source projects such as the Linux kernel , Debian , GNOME , and many more. Maemo draws most of its GUI, frameworks and libraries from GNOME project.

Nokia to start using Meego on their N-series Smartphones, no more Symbian

Nokia announced this Thursday that from now on the N-series smartphones will have Meego instead of Symbian. The upcoming N8 handset will be the last in this series running Symbian. This doesn't mean Symbian will be kicked off the main stream, it will still be used in low spec/cheaper Nokia phones, which have a huge demand in developing countries. But in order to compete in the smartphone industry, Nokia is coming with the ultimate combo, N-series + Meego.

MeeGo is now open for Development

Today, Intel's Open Source Technology Center Director, Imad Sousou, announced that the source of  Linux-based Mobile platform, MeeGo, announced in February, is now open for development. This is not an official tested release for end-users, it aims to involve the developers from all around the world in its earliest stages of development.

Firefox released a tour video of their first mobile browser on Nokia N900. It was a truly amazing experience seeing Firefox mobile browser with so many cool features. I have seen and used a few mobile browsers but Firefox is way better. Check out the video and see for yourself.

Firefox for Maemo 1.0 has released

Just after 3 days of the release of Firefox for Maemo RC3, Firefox has officially announced Version 1.0 of Firefox for the Nokia's Maemo Platform. This is the first mobile web browser released by Firefox and its the first moblie browser that supports addons, the charm of Firefox ;).

Fennec for Android arrives, a pre-alpha release

So, finally Fennec developers are ready to bring a pre-alpha release on Android. One of the developers, Vladimir, announced in a blog post that they are proud to bring a Fennec build usable by general Android users. This is the first time Firefox for Mobile, aka Fennec, will land on Android phones for general public and the developers are looking forward for a huge response and feedback.

Get ready Developers for Firefox Mobile Add-on Challenge

Mozilla has launched a contest to speed up the add-ons development for the newly released Firefox for Mobile Browser. Add-on developers all around the world are challenged to use their innovation and skills to come up with some great add-ons for the Mobile browser keeping in mind the mobile context (small screen size, touch screen, etc.). Top 10 winners will be awarded a N900 + some great mobile merchandise.
