Correct your habit of incorrectly typing "ls" using the program "sl"

Almost everyone of us would have made the mistake of incorrectly typing “sl” or “LS” instead of a simple “ls”. Seriously! how difficult could it be to type those two letters? But we keep making the same mistake over and over. In order to correct this problem, there is a wonderful program name “sl”. It shows a small animation of a steam locomotive(abbr. sl) every time we type “sl” or “LS”.

Axel - A console based Download Accelerator for Linux

I am a big fan of wget. It provides you with immense capabilities, but when it comes to accelerating the download speed, wget doesn't provide any option. After searching for a decent download accelerator for Linux, I came across axel and it being a console tool is an added bonus.

Make ManPages navigable using man2html

Man pages are awesome. They usually have the answer to all of your queries, but the one thing they lack is the navigation among various pages. If you find another useful command while viewing a manpage, you can't just jump to its manual. You will have to run a separate command on the terminal to open it. So, while looking for a manpage viewer that solves this problem, I came across man2html. This tool lets you view manpages as html pages on a web browser.

You can easily install it by running the following command in a terminal.

Basket Note Pads - The best scribble pad/note application

Tomboy notes is a great tool when you are looking for a scribble pad to write down a few words, but sometimes you need more. What if you are asked to write a report on some topic; a scribble pad is good to jot down a few points but in a digital world you can get a lot more help from web links, various documents, images etc. combined together with the text than with only the latter. No scribble pad(physical or a software) will give you that kind of freedom. This is where I love Basket note pads. Its like working on a virtual scrapbook.

Subdownloader - A subtitle downloader for Linux

The biggest turn off when you are planning to watch a movie is the part where you have to download the subtitle and things get even worse when you can’t find the right one. Subdownloader is a tool that lets you download/upload subtitle files from opensubtitles.org and make this not so friendly task easier. I am not sure how it does it, but all the subtitle files downloaded through it sync perfectly .

Script - A command line tool to record/save your terminal activity

You may know about a lot of cool softwares but they become cooler when you find a use for them. Recently, someone told me about this brilliant command line tool - "script". It saves a session of your terminal. No! Its not like history. In spite of saving each command per line in a text file, script makes a typescript of everything that happens on the terminal. Screencasting tools to a desktop session(GUI) is what script is to a terminal.

Artha - a brilliant offline English Dictionary for Linux

I believe most of the computer users use dictionaries a lot. I have been using gnome-dictionary for a while. Its default settings are to fetch information over the Internet, but it can be easily configured to work offline. I was pretty happy with it but once you start using it often, you'll realize how terrible its interface is.

Keryx 1.0 coming soon - Install the pre-release on Ubuntu using PPA

Chris Oliver, lead developer of Keryx, tweeted yesterday that we can expect keryx 1.0 to come out very soon. The main features have all been added, its just the finishing stage. This release is significantly different from the current release of Keryx. We have already seen the new features this release aims to bring.

GMusicBrowser - A powerful Music Player and Manager for Large collections

There are a lot of good music players out there - exaile, banshee, amarok etc. but when it comes to searching through large music collections and by large I mean thousands of songs with a lot of metadata, the results are not always satisfactory . I usually end up selecting the song through a file browser. GMusicBrowser is an audio player built for Music Fanatics, capable of handling large music collections(> 10,000 songs).

SteadyFlow - A simple and easy to use Download Manager for Gnome

Steadyflow is probably the simplest download manager that could exist. The good thing is its being light on the resources, quick and easy access from the panel and it could even be managed from terminal. It is not available in Ubuntu repos, you will have to install it through PPA.
