How to update Firefox to 3.6.6 on Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx
Firefox 3.6.6 is a quick update to fix the hanging timeout issue in the crash protective Firefox 3.6.4. There seems to be a trouble with either old computer or people trying to play Farmville because of the loading time. So, if you are facing similar trouble on your Ubuntu system, its time to update. We will use the same ubuntu-mozilla-security ppa again.
In order to download and install it, run the following commands.
[shredder12]$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa
[shredder12]$ sudo apt-get update
Now, if somehow the first command doesn't work for you then try the manual adding of PPA in APT sources. Follow this ppa installation guide in case of any trouble.
If this all goes well, then you will see an update of Firefox in the update manager.
Just hit install and update your browser to Firefox 3.6.6. If you are not dealing with 200+ updates, (like the one in my VirtualBox system above), then you may even run the following command to update it.
[shredder12]$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Now, enjoy the new Firefox 3.6.6.
Please note that, this method should work on other Ubuntu releases as well, but we don't guarantee success. Since, this build is in ubuntu-mozilla-security ppa, it hasn't been verified to be free from security bugs. So, please keep in mind while installing it.
If you have any trouble installing or want to add/edit something please leave a comment.
