How to play youtube videos in totem

An important feature of most of the open source softwares, which we normally overlook are provided by them in the form of plugins. Take pidgin and totem as examples.. have you ever tried to look into the plugins they provide and see what extra functionality can we add to the software. I guess the answer is NO!!. Anyway, in this article I will tell you how to browse/play youtube videos in totem.

And before starting.. let me tell you that this plugin is developed by Philip Withnall, to see his article take a look at the references below.

Now, open totem and go to Edit => plugins. You will see this window.. jst check youtube and close it.

Open the sidebar (click on the sidebar button at the right bottom corner of player). Click on the drop down box and select youtube.

Now, enter the query you want to search and hit find. You will see something like this..

Click on the video you want to play or right click and select add to playlist. It should start playing the video. If it doesn't and you see an error like this.

Then this is probably because of some bug in the youtube script. To fix it open the file /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube/youtube.py

[shredder12]$ sudo gedit /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube/youtube.py

Go to the 337 line which is

then change urllib.quote (t_param) to t_param and your file will then look like this.

Save the file and restart totem. You should be able to play videos now.

Now, enjoy youtube with Totem :) ..

I have a little problem here... I'm getting the exact same playback problem which you mentioned, but my /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube folder does NOT contain the "youtube.py" file in it. Instead there are other three files, which are called: 1) libyoutube.so 2) youtube.totem-plugin 3) youtube.iu can you help me out please? what should I do?

I'm having the same problem too. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4, and I don't have the "youtube.py."
